The Importance of the time-out corner...

It's midnight and I'm blogging on the sofa. Why you ask? Because as it happens, the husband retired early this evening and I feared waking him.

WRONG.

My husband of almost a year went to bed pissed off because of a minor disagreement we had over something ridiculous. But because he went to bed angry with nary a resentful kiss on the cheek, or a reluctant "goodnight" I must stay downstairs for the alloted "I'll show YOU" amount of time. Which brings me to the subject of the "time-out corner".

When we were children, a timeout corner served as a space for us to stand (or sit) when we had been naughty. It acted as a place of peace and allowed for reflection on our bad behavior. As adults this corner is not only useful, it is very important.

Designing a peaceful space for reflection in your home is creating an area of retreat when there is a necessity for regained composure. Avoid overthinking this space, or making it too fussy.

As I write this I am sitting in my own personal "time out" corner. It is located on the farthest corner portion of my sofa. That is where I keep my favorite throw blanket, my favorite books on the side table, my favorite candle, my favorite... well you get the idea.

We aren't kids anymore, but a place of refuge will always be important. You may be wrong in a disagreement, or you may be right. Either way, a little time out in our favorite corner space allows us the opportunity to reflect on all the great things in our lives, and maybe jussssssst maybe motivate us to go get that goodnight kiss anyway.
